Funny....

Kids Say the Darndest Things: Found this on www.inspiringteachers.com

and THIS is why I love kids :)

Below is a compilation of actual student bloopers collected by teachers from 8th through 12th grades.
  1. Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert and traveled by Camelot. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.
  2. The Bible is full of interesting caricatures. In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. One of their children, Cain, asked, "Am I my brother's son?"
  3. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada.
  4. Solomom had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines.
  5. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth.
  6. Actually, Homer was not written by Homer but by another man of that name.
  7. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.
  8. In the Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled the biscuits, and threw the java.
  9. Eventually, the Romans conquered the Greeks. History calls people Romans because they never stayed in one place for very long.
  10. Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: "Tee hee, Brutus."
  11. Nero was a cruel tyranny who would torture his subjects by playing the fiddle to them.
  12. Joan of Arc was burnt to a steak and was cannonized by Bernard Shaw.
  13. Finally Magna Carta provided that no man should be hanged twice for the same offense.
  14. In mid-evil times most people were alliterate. The greatest writer of the futile ages was Chaucer, who wrote many poems and verses and also wrote literature.
  15. Another story was William Tell, who shot an arrow through an apple while standing on his son's head.
  16. Queen Elizabeth was the "Virgin Queen." As a queen she was a success. When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted "hurrah."
  17. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. And Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper.
  18. The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couplet. Romeo's last wish was to be laid by Juliet.
  19. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.
  20. During the Renaissance America began. Christopher Columbus was a great navigator who discovered America while cursing about the Atlantic. His ships were called the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Fe. Later, the Pilgrims crossed the ocean, and this was called Pilgrim's Progress. The winter of 1620 was a hard one for the settlers. Many people died and many babies were born. Captain John Smith was responsible for all this.

Labor Day

I wish that I could trade my Tuesday classes and have this one instead of going two weeks without it. Ms. White, you are so inspiring and I can feel your passion running through the room. I definitely want to build that kind of passion for what I am diving into. I know that it has already been placed in my life to go through with special education because I thought about doing some other things but always came back to this, so I decided it was on my heart and mind so heavily for a God given reason. I peer tutored in high school and loved it, even though I witnessed a kid going off, I got punched and kicked, I was drooled on, I was cussed at, and I was hugged or touched a little too closely. I know that I have been given the patience and the love for this field and I cannot wait to start this career!! I hope everyone feels as excited as I do! (: Have a great Labor Day, extended weekend!
I found a video on Youtube that i use with my son i was just wondering if anyone could help me upload it onto here

Trouble with Phonemes

I believe I'm going to have some trouble with Phonemes. For example, when we did the small activity in class I had trouble doing my name. I'm worried that I'm not mastering it as well as I should be able to. If I work with children then this is going to be a problem :( Everything else I'm great on. I can explain as well as work with others explaining the material however, phonemes are giving a little trouble :/

About Me

My name is Alyssa Wetzel, and I am currently a 5th year student here at EKU. I am more than ready to move out of Richmond, as much fun as it's been! :) My major is Deaf Education, and i'm still uncertain where I want to go with it. I have always said that God will lead me to where ever I am meant to be, so it's an adventure! Last March I was blessed with my first niece (Anna) she lives in Corbin, KY with my sister and brother-n-law. I'm completely obssesed with her!
I am a VERY outgoing person, and can't wait to get to know everyone in this class.

Sematics and pragmatics

I was just looking over my notes from class and what i wrote down for pragmatics and sematics does not make sense to me now. Can anyone help?

About Me

My name is Daniel Williams and I am 25 years old. This is my first semester in richmond and i have previously attended EKU at the Corbin extension and Union College where I played baseball for a year. I am a Special Ed major and hopefully only have a year left of school. I also work a full time job at the Appalachain Children's home in Barbourville Ky, where i am from.
still having some trouble commenting. so I guess i will have to get my 5 posts this way. if anyone has any idea why I am not able to access the comments please let me know. thanks!
Bri
I think I have a pretty basic understanding of phonemes and morphemes.

A late About Me :)

Hey guys :)
So my name is Janea Johnston and I am a Deaf Ed. major here at EKU. I was born in Frankfort KY but I have moved 12 times and lived in 9 states since then :) I graduated and moved here from Tennessee. I have always wanted to be a teacher but I decided on Deaf Ed. in the 7th grade when I lived in South Carolina and we watched the movie The Miracle Worker. It seems silly but I really look up to Helen Keller and I think Anne Sullivan was a great educator. It's kind of corny but it is what happened :)
is anyone having trouble commenting on things? it wont allow me too. if anyone has any idea why this is happening please let me know! It says that I dont have access to the page whenever I try to comment on anything.

Wallace

Hey guys,
did you all read the email about the smoke in the wallace building today? I was just wondering if any of you knew if they are going to be having classes today in there or if they have started having them again? I am a commuter and it'd be nice to know before I head over there! Thanks!
Bri

Yay finally figured this out!

Hello!!!!! I'm Brandi. I am a Special Education major. I am from the western side of Kentucky, like 20 minutes away from Western Kentucky University. I know everyone always wants to know why I didn't go to school there but those who come from a small school know that you just want to escape! I believe there is only 4 of us that graduated from my school and came here (best decision ever). Quick question.. have you all had as many problems with your EKU Email as I have. I feel like it only works 30 percent of the time >: I! I kind of really love this blogging thing. I was kind of worried at first but I really like it.. I even started my own. There are a lot of things that I've seen so far that I love. You guys rock and I am excited to keep posting!

Hey,
My name is Andrea Behm. I am a Deaf Ed. major from this lovely city of Richmond. It has always been my dream to teach kindergarten, then ASL fell into my life, and I fell in love with it. Now, I want to teach ASL or be a special ed. teacher who has (a) deaf student(s). I love everything about Deaf culture and how unique it is. This summer, I am planning on being a camp counselor/dorm advisor at a deaf camp. fingers crossed!

Equal Access for Communication for All!

I thought this video was cool, which all signing I think is cool. It gives you an idea of how not only deaf people may feel, but a possible student in the classroom.

learning objectives

I have basic understanding of comparing and contrasting speech, language and communication but I am still a little unclear. I know how they are similar but how are they different? I know that speech is a verbal sound and communication can be verbal or nonverbal. So how are speech, language, and communication different?

Help!

I am trying to comment on post and it won't let me post! I don't know what I am doing wrong. It was doing it early as well so I don't know if I just am clicking something wrong or what! Help!!!

Soooo,

I am just blogging away. I left class early due to a prier engagement and I was wondering if someone could fill me in on what morphemes activity we did and what exactly morphemes are?! I would be very thankful!

Morphemes

I found this video on you tube. it kind of explains morphemes and gives some good examples. I found her video pretty entertaining. She has another video but it has to do with helping people understand morphemes in biology. It list even more examples.

Sorry

Sorry for my last post, I was having computer trouble. I have a question regarding morphemes, I am having difficulty understanding how they change the word meaning? Can anyone give me some more examples?

Hello

Hello

Test

Test
I have a basic understanding of morpehmes but i am still confused phonemes.

Language differences vs. Language disorders

I have basic understanding of students who exhibit language differences but would not have a language disorder. However, I am still unclear regarding how one would be able to differientiate between how someone could have one or the other. Suppose a student has grown up in an all english speaking family, but has a different way that they speak; such as an accent, would that be language difference. But maybe they also have a language disorder on top of that how would you be able to know if it was one, the other or both.

Learning Objectives

Previously I had a Communication Disorders class which was the introduction to all of our learning objectives. I am pretty comfortable with phonemes, morphemes, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. It never hurts to keep practicing though and I understand it the more and more I work with these.
I have a basic understanding of this concept. However, I am still unclear regarding how a morpheme can change the meaning of a word. The brief explanation about the bound and free morphemes assisted with my understanding, but I think my misunderstanding is what exactly would be considered a morpheme. The difference in the free morpheme mobile and the bound morpheme re have me confused on how basic a morpheme can be or how broad.
Help Please!

about me

Hey guys,
Well guess I will introduce and tell you all a little about myself. I am Brianna Briggs, Bri for short please, I dont like being called Briannna really. I went to a very small christian school in Somerset, KY. So small in fact that I only had 9 people in my graduating class of 2009. I played volleyball for over 7 years and I miss it terribly. I am an elementary deaf/hh major with a minor in psychology. I love it and can't wait to be working and helping kids. I have a boyfriend that I have been with for almost a year now. :) I love meeting new people in class and can't wait to get to know some of you all. Have a good one!

Learning Objective 3

I have a basic understanding of this concept but I am still unclear on how students can exhibit language differences but do not necessarily have a language disorders. Can anyone explain this to me or more detail?

Communication

Okay so this might be a silly question but...
If a person talks to himself, is there communication occurring?
So, what do youi think?

Me!! :)

Hello everyone my name is Kala Lakes. I am a Special Ed Deaf/HH major here at EKU. I am a nontraditional student. I live about an hour from campus with my Husband and Two sweet little boys. I chose to become a teacher because of my children. I love to work with kids and couldn't imagine what else would be more satisfying than teaching.

ABC Poem

Last semester in EDF 203 I had to find cute things for my portfolio and I found this cute little poem that I thought some of the other students might enjoy as well.

Children Are...

Amazing,cherish them.
Believable, trust them.
Childlike, let them.
Divine, respect them.
Energetic, nourish them.
Fallible, embrace them.
Gifts, unwrap them.
Here Now, be with them.
Innocent, delight in them.
Joyful, appreciate them.
Kindhearted, join them.
Lovable, love them.
Magical, fly with them.
Noble, esteem them.
Open-minded, hear them.
Precious, treasure them.
Questioners, encourage them.
Resourceful, support them.
Spontaneous, enjoy them.
Talented, believe in them.
Unique, affirm them.
Vulnerable, protect them.
Whole, recognize them.
Xtraspecial, celebrate them.
Yearning, notice them.
Zany, laugh with them.

I guess I'll start off like the rest of the pack and say a little bit about myself. I transferred from BCTC in Lexington last semester and it might have been the best decision I ever made. I'm majoring in Special Education specifically Elementary. I've worked for Fayette County Public Schools for 3 years now at Squires Elementary. And that hands down was the best job I've ever had. That's the school that made me realize that I needed and wanted to teach. I also work at a small sports bar in Lexington called Jay's. So needless to say I stay fairly busy. When I am able to find some free time I spend a lot of it with my family and in Louisville. Speaking of which go UK!! Anyways that's just a little about me to start off.

A little bit about me

I like lists. So I am going to make a list about the top 10 things that make me me!
1. I am very independent
2. My favorite colors are Red and Green because they remind me of Christmas which is my favorite
3. My favorite food is cake
4. I have three sisters and one brother, they mean everything to me
5. My Mommy and Daddy (yes, I am 19 and I still call them that) are the best thing that ever happened to me
6. I am a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Theta love is all I need : )
7. I am the world worst speller
8. Fight Club is my favorite movie, Glee and True Blood are my favorite TV shows
9. I come from Woodford County, I grew up on a farm. I am country girl born and raised
10. I laugh way to often and way to much. It helps you live longer I believe.

Me In A Paragraph :)

Hi All-

My name is Julie; I am working on a dual major for Elementary Education and Special Education. I am a sophomore and my encouragement to myself is I only have five more semesters. My dream job is to give back to the same community that gave me so much by teaching at the school I all but grew up in: Hattie C. Warner Elementary. I have a wonderful fiancé back home (Nicholasville, KY), we’ve been together over a year now and we’re expecting our first baby on Valentine’s Day. We’re looking forward to this bundle of joy but I think I’m looking forward to it more so that I can be around kiddos 24/7! :) I’ve always loved kids and was very excited that for a late fifth birthday present I got a baby brother. I spent more time playing with my brother than is probably natural! Since I’ve been in college I’ve figured out how to deal with home sickness (lots of phone calls, Facebook(!), Skype, etc.), I’ve learned that I have a lot better grasp of who I am as a person, and I am more and more devoted to getting organized, not procrastinating, and getting my life going. When things don’t work the way I’d like them to, I thank God for having a better plan than I did; When things do work the way I’d like them to, I thank God for letting me in on His plan. :)

Volunteer Work

If anyone is interested in doing some volunteer work. Every Friday from 5-7 at the YMCA in Richmond a program called K.A.P.E. (Kentucky Adapted Physical Education) works with children with disabilities teaching them how to swim and play sports. The program works with children from age 4 up to 18. There will be an orientation on Sept 9th at 5 at the YMCA. If anyone is interested just ask or you can email Dr. Debolt ( louisa.debolt@eku.edu) she is the professor at EKU in charge of the program. It is really rewarding and fun. Last semester I worked with a little girl who was 5 who had Autism. She was the sweetest little girl ever. We worked on swimming without a life jacket and playing soccer, volleyball, hockey, and basketball. They have a facebook page that has pictures and videos of some of the activities you do just search for Kentucky Adapted Physical Education. They also have a program on Thursday nights working with Adults Dr Debolt is the same person in charge of that as well.

The Center For Courageous Kids

A little about Me

Hello My name is Heather. I am the proud mother of 3 beautiful girls, Ciena, age 9, Trista, age 7, and Miley, age 3. I have been married to my husband, David for 10 years and most days we are extremely happy. Just don't ask today. lol Anyway, I grew up in Florida then when I was a senior in high school; my dad lost his job and we moved to Liberty, Ky. If you don't know where that is, it's probably a good thing. I graduated high school, moved out of my parents house, got married on My Super Nanny's farm, and we have been living happily ever after ever since. Well minus a few disagreements, but who hasn't had those. I am a lifetime student and have slowing getting my schooling finished and when I grow up I will be a Sign Language Interpreter. Seriously I have had another child since I started school. I feel like I have been going forever, but keep telling myself I will get done one day, hopefully before my oldest gets into college. I'm pretty sure she would frown upon us being in the same classes. If you can't tell I'm a little long winded, even in my typing.

Just a cute little poem to make you smile

Searching for Gold

Look beneath the freckles
Look beneath the grin
Look for that which sparkles
Buried deep within.

Look beyond the whining
Look beyond the tears
Look beyond the runny nose
The frowns, the mess, the fears.

Search for that which glitters
Treasures to unfold
Search beneath the surface
Search and find the gold!

by Jean Warren

This is short and sweet, but I really love it. I figured that any other future teacher would too, so enjoy! I'll see you all Monday. Enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

Welcome to SED260

The class blog will become what YOU make it!!  It's been fun and interesting in past semesters to see the different class personalities come through on the blog.  This is where we will foster COMMUNICATION and a sense of community.  I look forward to getting to know you better in class and through this online venue. This is where you can post questions about class discussions, assignments, the text and course content in general.  It's also the place where you can post videos, websites, songs, poems, any item of interest to you that connects to course material or that you wish to share with your classmates.

A great way to get started is to share an introduction of yourself.  Be creative - introduce yourself in a UNIQUE way.  Use text and write/post an intro or think of another way to introduce us to yourself.  You might share with us one "little known fact" about yourself. Or you can share anything interesting you'd like.

Look forward to seeing what you will share!
