My momma (:

Hey everyone! I just wanted you all to know this week has been SUPER STRESSFUL on me.. I don't know if anyone else has had a rough week or not.. I have had assignments due in every class, projects, papers, exams, and the list goes on. I am taking the ACT this Monday, so that isn't helping my level of stress.

Yesterday, my mom had surgery on her colon. She had a pre-cancerous polyp they had to remove. She is recovering pretty efficiently, but she will be in the hospital until Monday or Tuesday! Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she continues to recover!

See you all Monday!
Kat

Good Morning All!

I hope that everyone's week has gone by well and that the presentations are coming along. I can't wait to see everyone's different approach to the subject! Have a great day and an even better weekend!! See you all on Monday evening!!

Nervous

Is anyone else as nervous as I am over the possibility of having a parent in class with us? It would be great to get a parent's perspective, but it's very intimidating!

group

To group 3, I posted I would meet you at Java City today. I just got home from the doctor I have strep. If there is anyway I can participate without a face to face meeting, I will gladly help out and be a part of your group. My cell is 859-893-1658. I had pink eye earlier in the week, and now strep, so I do not want to share with the rest of you. :) Please let me know if I can help out in any way. Thanks!

Group Presentation Rubric

The presentation activity is an OPTIONAL activity and Bonus Points will be available for each of you who are participating. This rubric will be used as a SELF and a PEER evaluation tool to assist me in determining the BONUS points awarded for each student.

Autism Presentation - GROUPS

Students,

There can only be FOUR groups due to amount of time we have to view presentations this coming Monday.  Each presentation should be between 3-5 minutes in length.  I will call time when a presentation goes to the 5 minute mark.

I have already spread this out from last week, dismissing class early and moving it into this week. We have much to cover regarding our Language Projects and we must move into understanding the analysis of Semantics and reviewing the other areas of the language project.

Group One:  Adam Browning, Heather Chambers, Julie Dellachiaie, Miranda Hines, Kala Lakes, Kat Lewis

Group Two: Andrea, Behm, Bri Briggs, Ashley Craft, Alyssa Wetzel, Courtney Young

Group Three: Brandi Walker, Shae Mitchell, Sarah Green, Jennifer Ciercorka,

Group Four: Samantha laBelle, Mandy Proffit & Janae Johnson

Those who were in class and especially those who stayed and worked on it have been given first preference for groups.  Others who have posted that they wish to "join the above" group...please now identify BY NUMBER which group you are joining.  If you have not yet joined a group please feel free to do so!  It is NOT TOO LATE!

I realize time is limited for you to meet with others but face to face meetings are not essential.  There are other ways to meet to determine how to do the presentation.

Remember this is not a required activity.  It is an optional activity for bonus points.

Mrs. White

Jessica Lykins and myself will be at java city Thursday at 11:30 if anyone wants to participate in our group. Thanks!

Samantha, Mandy, and I have formed a group as well and we will be meeting in Java City on Wednesday at 4:30 if anyone would like to join us :)

Tonight's class on Autism was designed to have the class divide into 4 groups to create presentations.  The class VOTED to work on these over the week and present next week.  WE DISMISSED AT 6:40!!!!  Two groups stayed and worked in the group while others will be working throughout the week.

BONUS points will be awarded to the individuals who participate in groups to use on ANY TEST they want!  If you are not in a group you can post here to join a group who has not completed their work and be a part of the work, presentation and opportunity to earn BONUS points.

I have my observation report ready to submit, but I noticed at the end of the assignment we are to complete a scoring rubric? How do we submit this? I am a little confused. Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Good chain letter

Two Choices

What would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its

Dedicated staff, he offered a question:

'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.

Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.

Where is the natural order of things in my son?'

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.'

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning..'

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt.. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball..

However, as Shay stepped up to the

Plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first!

Run to first!'

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.

He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, 'Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay'

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third!

Shay, run to third!'

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!'

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world'.

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

Camp Nuhop

So I know this is a little random as summer was quite a while ago but I worked at a camp for children with special needs this summer such as autism, EBD, ADHD, ect. I absoluted loved the experience, if anyone is looking for a job this summer and doesn't mind going all the way to Perrysville Ohio or you know a kid that may have trouble going to other camps, send them our way. So even though I loved it, there was one behavior that I just couldn't seem to work with and that is the habit of just walking away and not saying where they are going, not in the sense of wandering as they don't know better but walk away in the sense of "eff this guys." If it only happens once or twice I can deal but I had one kid who would do it multiple times a day, it almost made me cry once sadly enough. What do you do about that? We would try to barter with him and tell him that all he had to do was say he needed a minute or say he was going to the bathroom or whatever but it didn't help and we didn't know what else to do. It was clearly for attention and it killed me. Any suggestions before I go back next summer?
