I thought this video was cool, which all signing I think is cool. It gives you an idea of how not only deaf people may feel, but a possible student in the classroom.
I think this video is great. so many people don't understand deaf culture or furthermore any one who is different from them... this is the attitude that people should try an adopt when encountering people who are different from their selves..
I totally agree with you Mirandamaye! It's really sad that people have had to go through that. I can remember the one thing that made me want to become a teacher was when I was in the 3rd grade. I was from a small school so I was the only black child in my grade, well my school, but I had a teacher that I guess didn't except differences. We had a girl in my class that had a very mild Cerebral Palsy in her hand and leg but was completely independent and you wouldn't know she had it. Well the teacher would treat her better than all the other children. The thing was that the little girl hated it she lost so many friends because of that.. but back to my thing, this teacher had to hate me. I was always wrong about something or she would just tell me to go sit down when I was at her desk asking a question. I didn't understand neither did the other children. They didn't see color on me just my teacher. From that day I decided that I would become a teacher just so children like me could have a chance. I believe I had my lowest grade I had ever had through school Elementary, middle, and high. All because of the color of my skin. I could only hope that one day everything will be excepted, disabilities, race, cultural beliefs, etc. By the time my children (which I don't have) will be in school I could only hope a new generation of teachers will have that open mind set and treat all as equal!
I've been fascinated with ASL since I was in third grade and encountered a child that was deaf/hard of hearing. This girl showed us a new sign each week and the two that I still remember are "bunny" and "love". I still want to take ASL classes if my schedule will allow it and even though I already have my two foreign language classes done :)
I am so glad you all enjoyed this video. I will try and share some others that are good. I think with any profession, everyone should learn how to sign. One never understands if a deaf person comes in to a school, doctors office, hair salon, etc. and one person can sign with them; it makes them feel better about being there.
