Sorry

Sorry for my last post, I was having computer trouble. I have a question regarding morphemes, I am having difficulty understanding how they change the word meaning? Can anyone give me some more examples?

  1. Re- is bound because it can not stand alone; it has no meaning unless it is bound to a word
    Ex:
    readjust, rethink, relearn, redo

A free morpheme such as scope, mobile or graph has a meaning of its own. In other words it can be used in a sentence without being paired with other phonemes.
    Ex:
A graph is an effective tool for accountants.
A telegraph is an old for of communication.

    Does this help any?

  2. Thank you so much Adam that helps a lot. I watched the video that someone posted and I was still kind of confused. I guess because I didn't understand what I was looking for. Thank you!

  4. Adam, thank you for sharing! This is a great way for people to share and grow their understanding of material.

You're exactly right that re is a bound morpheme. It is because it cannot form a word by itself. However, it DOES have meaning. It means "again."

This leads us to the definition or WHAT IS a morpheme - it is the smallest unit of MEANING. So, you see in order for a segment of a word, such as re or graph or un or even an "s" to be classified as a morpheme it must denote some form of meaning.
