If anyone is interested in doing some volunteer work. Every Friday from 5-7 at the YMCA in Richmond a program called K.A.P.E. (Kentucky Adapted Physical Education) works with children with disabilities teaching them how to swim and play sports. The program works with children from age 4 up to 18. There will be an orientation on Sept 9th at 5 at the YMCA. If anyone is interested just ask or you can email Dr. Debolt ( louisa.debolt@eku.edu) she is the professor at EKU in charge of the program. It is really rewarding and fun. Last semester I worked with a little girl who was 5 who had Autism. She was the sweetest little girl ever. We worked on swimming without a life jacket and playing soccer, volleyball, hockey, and basketball. They have a facebook page that has pictures and videos of some of the activities you do just search for Kentucky Adapted Physical Education. They also have a program on Thursday nights working with Adults Dr Debolt is the same person in charge of that as well.
I love this idea but i don't get done working at model till 5:30 on Fridays. would it be too late to come after.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I could do every Friday? Is every other Friday a possibility?
ReplyDeleteThe children don't actually get to the YMCA till 5:30 but Dr. Debolt likes you to be there early because she is crazy about people being on time and early. So I am sure it would be fine to come at 6. Also you don't have to come every Friday. You could just come when you could and they would have you work with a kid whose volunteer isn't there. The EKU football players come out a lot and most of them just come whenever. They can always use some extra hands in case on of the volunteers can't come so the child needs to work with someone.
ReplyDeleteIt is really fun. I would love it. It's a challange but so worth it.

ReplyDeleteOh yea I forgot to ask before. Do you have to be able to swim to do this or certified?
ReplyDeleteSo do you work with a group of kids or one individual.
